Our History

Learn about The Rotary Club of Papanui
and Rotary International

The Rotary Club of Papanui was chartered in 1958, and currently has approximately 32 Members. Today a third of our members are women and we actively encourage a diverse membership who come from all walks of life.

Rotary has been creating connections and making an

impact for more than a century.

Rotary started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships.

Over time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian service. Members have a long track record of addressing challenges in their communities and around the world.

Since 1989 women have become active members in Rotary, serving their communities in increasing numbers and serving in leadership positions in Rotary. In 2022-23 year Jennifer Jones became the first woman to serve as the Rotary International President and in 2024-25 Stephanie Urchick is the second woman to serve in this role.

Our top priority is for Papanui Rotary to grow and diversify our membership to make sure we reflect the community we serve.
